The installation, the biggest in the region in terms of project size involves complete automated digitized newsroom systems that allow streamlining, acquisition, digitization, editing and play-out of RTM news operations nationwide. The increased and popular adoption of new and digital media with greater earning powers over the years has seen Malaysians demanding higher quality programming from the current broadcast stations. Significant growth has also been seen in the ownership of televisions as well as Broadcast stations with the country’s 2nd pay-per view station poised to commence operations in December 2004. This division is expected to enhance the company’s ability to serve our clients better as well as allow us to play an extended role in the Broadcast industry. This is also in line with our Malaysian government’s call for technology transfer and the creation of a knowledge economy utilizing Malaysian expertise. Currently, a substantial portion of broadcast engineering work is undertaken by 3rd party contractors from foreign countries. contract to install newsroom system for RTM Information Technology Systems Integrator Digistar Corp Bhd has secured a RM19 million contract from Gala Antenna Sdn Bhd to supply and install an automated digital newsroom system for Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM). Digistar managing director Lee Wah Chong said that under the five-month contract, Digistar will serve as a vendor and system integrator for the automated digital newsroom system integration for RTM. He said, however, that the company is confident of completing the installation of the system within four months from the date of appointment. “The job involves complete automated digital newsroom systems that allow streamlining & acquisition, digitisation, editing and play-out,” Lee told Business Times. Digistar will supply and in stall one of the largest auto mated digital newsroom systems in Asia, which will cover all RTM news operations nation wide. Under the contract, journalist workstations, direct electronic digital signal input, story edit ng, rundown creation and studio play-out will be integrated into a single system. This will maximise efficiency, minimise human error and bring news-to-air as it happens from all over the country and the world. The system will also join together RTM’s resource pool for both television and radio. According to Lee, this installation is the biggest in the region in terms of project size. Although TV stations in the US and Europe have converted to digital format, most of the TV stations in Asia, including Malaysia, are still using the analogue format. This significant difference will create a big business opportunity for Digistar for the next five to 10 years to explore this high-technology-based broadcast industry” Lee said. To date, its total book order stands at about RM7O million. Under the contract, a central facility will be installed
at RTM’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur in & fully-renovated newsroom.
A news journalist in Miri, for example, will have online access to the central story database in Kuala Lumpur once the system is hilly installed, Facilities will be provided for story writing, editing, file search and preview right at a journalist’s desktop computer. Text, audio and video can all be independently handled and married — all live online. Sophisticated craft editing with graphic composition overlays can be provided from specialised edit suites. In addition to the technology transfer, Digistar will utilise local expertise for the project. <%END IF%> |
